The sustainable food movement seems to be exploding these days, whether on farms, or in communities. This is great news, because our primarily industrialized food system – along with our collective health in the US – is in dire straits. The way our food is produced and consumed has profound impacts on the environment, health, our communities and animal welfare. While much needs to be done on a public policy level to address deep systemic problems, especially around equal access to fresh and healthy food, our personal food choices DO make a profound difference.
In this Sustainable Ingredients section, you’ll find primers on the most important factors to consider when shopping for sustainable food. Use the links in the header above to clarify your understanding of food labels, to cut through the greenwashing, and to prioritize how to best spend your food dollar in support of a sustainable food system. In no particular order.
